A Mississippi lawmaker asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday why 10 percent of hurricane trailers returned to the agency have been considered unfit to live in after billions have been spent on maintenance contracts.
Second District Rep. Bennie Thompson, the Democrat who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, wrote FEMA Administrator David Paulison a letter questioning allocating $3.6 billion on 36 maintenance contracts for travel trailers and mobile homes that still are housing about 80,000 victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
He asked Paulison why FEMA did not implement a contracting monitoring program that “would have, and should have,” uncovered instances that affected residents’ quality of life and the value of the trailers.
