Sheriff to Subpoena Mayor over Jail Allegations
Sheriff Malcolm McMillin said any information the mayor might have should be shared immediately.
“If he knows, why will he wait until after the election?” McMillin said. “I want it to come out. If I have deputies who are guilty of wrongdoing, I want to deal with them today.”
Melton points to politics as the true reason he and the sheriff are on the outs.
“He’s made up his mind that I’ve had two other individuals to run against him, and that’s absolutely not true,” Melton said.
One of those individuals is Lester Williams, who works for the city. The other is Jackson police official Tyrone Lewis, who has also served as a spokesman for the city.
“I know for a fact that he has utilized his contributors list, so he’s been provided with that, and he’s been provided with other help,” McMillin said, referring to one of his opponents.
As for the detention center allegations, McMillin is not taking them lightly.
“I’ve sent a letter today…to the district attorney’s office…to get a subpoena to give to us to serve on (Melton) in order that he might be able to apprise the grand jury of any wrongdoing that he might be aware of.”
“My personal feelings toward (McMillin) will never change,” Melton said, “but I’m very disappointed and very hurt that we don’t have the day-to-day relationship that we’ve had for the last 25 years.”
“What you’re not going to do,” McMillin said, “is make unfounded accusations and me not challenge you.”
