Jackson Mayor Frank Melton turned over his pack of cigarettes to his doctor at a news conference Tuesday morning in an effort to promote a proposed citywide smoking ban.
The American Heart Association has met several times with Melton, hoping to get his support for the ban.
According to the Health Department, at least 4,700 Mississippians die every year from smoking-related diseases.
