Thompson’s entry into the race comes at the direct expense of John McCain and Mitt Romney. Virtually all of Thompson’s steady rise in a wide variety of national polls has come out of McCain’s numbers, which have steadily fallen. While Romney’s numbers have held steady, his effort to recreate himself as a conservative has never moved him above about 10% support in the major polls, and Thompson will completely block Romney’s strategy to emerge as the choice of social conservatives.
