Wednesdays with Charlie Ross 5/9/7

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 9, 2007

Every week I write about how the campaign is getting busier, but I also want you to know that Sharon and I are truly having fun. As she says, “This is the hardest fun we’ve ever had.” We enjoy traveling throughout the state and meeting so many wonderful people who love Mississippi as much as we do.

Last week, I rolled out the first part of my “Action Agenda”, which will offer my plan to address many of the issues that affect Mississippians. Last week’s portion was on illegal immigration. I am one hundred percent against illegal immigration, period. But, as with any issue in my campaign, I am not going to just talk about the problem. I am always going to offer solutions to the issues we, as Mississippians, face each day. My plan to combat illegal immigration is comprehensive-it calls for stiffer penalties for human traffickers, better policies to keep illegals off payrolls, better enforcement of immigration laws, and not allowing bail for illegal immigrants who commit crimes. To view my entire Action Agenda on illegal immigration, visit http://www.charlieross.com/media/actionplan1.pdf .

I enjoyed traveling to Wall Doxey State Park in Marshall County last Thursday to speak at the 1st Congressional District Republican Caucus meeting. Between mingling with Northern Mississippians and eating some great barbeque, I was honored to receive the endorsement of one of my conservative allies in the State Senate, Senator Ralph Doxey. I have had the pleasure of working closely with Senator Doxey as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary A Committee, on which he serves as Vice-Chairman.

Senator Doxey is a great asset to both his district and the people of Mississippi, and I am proud to have his endorsement. Since the primary job of the lieutenant governor is running the Senate, the endorsement of conservative senators who have seen me work in the Senate is especially meaningful.

This past weekend, I attended two events. First, I participated in the Braxton Fire Department’s “Spring Fling.” I don’t think any of us could sum up the service that our communities’ fire and rescue workers do for our safety and that of our families. They will forever deserve our thanks and support for the essential job that they perform.

I also attended Relay for Life in Byram to support the fight against cancer. I think we have all dealt, either directly or indirectly, with the great challenges of cancer and it is crucial that we continue to both improve cancer treatment and support the research for a cure.

On Monday and Tuesday, I was on the Coast in Jackson and Harrison Counties. The people on the Coast are strong and the recovery of the region must be an ongoing priority. We must ensure that we stand by them so they can complete the recovery and make the Coast better than ever.

We need your help getting our conservative message out to all Mississippians. Please tell your friends, family, co-workers, church members, and neighbors about the positive conservative vision we have for Mississippi. Just as important, we need your help by either volunteering or donating. No matter where you live in Mississippi, you can volunteer in your area-there is always something to do-and contributions are always welcome and needed. For more information about volunteering or donating, including getting bumper stickers or yard signs, please visit our website, http://www.charlieross.com, or call our Jackson office at (601) 362-7677.
