Early primaries put Miss. on sidelines in nomination process

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 4, 2007

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 5/4/7

At last count, some 22 states comprising 60 percent of the population, and that many presidential delegate votes, will hold preferential primaries the same day on Feb. 5. Eighteen of them have moved up their primaries to that early date and, in effect, they will decide for the rest of us which Democratic and Republican candidates will be on our November ballot.

That means Mississippi will be relegated to being what is called a “spectator” state, while the biggies, especially the so-called battleground states, control the presidential nominating process.
