Major General (Ret.) Hopkins Announces Candidacy for Attorney General

(Gulfport, MS) – Gulfport attorney Major General (Ret.) Al Hopkins has qualified as the Republican Nominee for Attorney General of Mississippi.

“Everyone knows about the terrible crime problem in Jackson, but drug-related crime is exploding on the Gulf Coast since Katrina,” Hopkins said. “In fact, no Mississippi community has been spared from this dangerous epidemic. People deserve better.”

“The people I talk to say we need an Attorney General who cares about keeping our families, homes, and businesses safe,” said Hopkins. “I’ll focus on putting criminals behind bars and fighting public corruption,” Hopkins said. “And if corporate citizens like insurance companies commit crimes, I’ll hold them to the letter of the law,” he said.

Hopkins, 66, began his public service in 1965 when he joined the 31st Infantry Division as an enlisted man. During his last four years of service, he served as Assistant Adjutant General of the State of Mississippi and retired as a Major General. He is serving his second six-year term as Chief Judge of the Court of Military Appeals.

“As a retired National Guard General, I’m extremely proud of our fighting men and women,” Hopkins said. “As Attorney General, I’ll continue to support them and do everything in my power to keep their families safe while they serve us overseas,” he said.

Hopkins is a native of Tippah County, being born in Ripley and raised in Walnut. He is a graduate of Delta State College, William Carey College and Ole Miss School of Law. He is married to the former Ruth Boyd of Walnut. They reside in Gulfport. They have two grown children, Ashley Anne and Norris. Norris is married to the former Jodie Gillespie of Hattiesburg. Al is a member of the First Baptist Church of Gulfport where he has taught for over 30 years.
