Roger Wicker Statement on Terrorist Wake Up Call

By: Magnolia Tribune - August 11, 2006

U. S. Rep. Roger Wicker said the news that British authorities foiled a terrorist plot to blow up airline flights en route to the United States should be a “wake-up call” to anyone who may have let down their guard in the global war on terrorism.

While there has not been a terrorist attack on the U.S. since September 11, 2001, the Congressman said it would be a fatal mistake to conclude the threat has diminished. “The forces of radical Islam aligned against us continue to plot and plan ways to kill innocent men, women, and children,” he said. “This shocking news from Britain is a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant and prepared to meet this challenge.”

The Congressman also said the action by the British is also a testament to the behind-the-scenes intelligence work being performed by the U.S. and its allies to thwart terrorist attacks before they can occur.

“As we approach the fifth anniversary of 9-11, the revelation from the United Kingdom sends a powerful message that we must be strong in our efforts to protect the homeland and take the fight to the terrorists around the world,” Wicker said.
