Hinds Jail Overcrowding

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors has voted to meet with the new Mayor Frank Melton administration in Jackson to try to work out a solution to jail overcrowding.

Hinds county supervisor Doug Anderson says he is ready to vote for a tax increase to fund the cost of new facilities at both the Hinds County Dentention Center and the Hinds County Penal Farm. Anderson says he believes the people would vote for a tax increase if it were to be put in referendum form, but he is willing to do it without a referendum.

Anderson sees it as voting to increase the “safety of the people of Hinds county.”

The current jail at Raymond can only hold 594 inmates without violating federal court orders. In recent days it has been above 600 inmates.
