Barbours Visit Mayor Melton at City Hall

Governor Haley Barbour and first lady Marsha Barbour went to city hall in Jackson Wednesday to pay a visit to newly elected Mayor Frank Melton.

From the smiles on their faces, you would never have known Barbour had fired Melton as Director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, when Barbour was first elected in 2004. They met behind closed doors, in the mayor’s ceremonial office at City Hall, which will become the office of Melton Chief of Staff, former Vicksburg Mayor Robert Walker. When they came out to face TVcameras, they were all smiles.

Melton revealed he had recruited Mrs. Barbour, to help him with an initiative aimed at keeping kids in school. Barbour talked about how important it is for Melton to succeed.

The Governor said, “I’m excited about what it means, let me just say this, if Jackson is not at it’s best, Mississippi is not at it’s best.” Barbour said he was, “very optimistic about where Frank Melton will take this city.” Melton described it as “a blessed day for the State of Mississippi, for me to have the honor, to stand with the governor and first lady.”
