To no one’s real surprise, Frank Melton will be the next mayor of Jackson. What is surprising is the margins he ran up in the primary (against a two term incumbent) and the general election (against a well known Republican).
Frank Melton (DEM) 24594 88.685%
Rick Whitlow (REP) 3138 11.315%
Total 27732
So what are the takeaways? Well first, I think to a person, everyone believes that Whitlow handled himself with class and dignity. His future in government (though maybe not in elective politics) is bright.
Most importantly, Melton has the burden of some very high expectations. His first 90-120 days will be critical to set the groundwork for future success. Though it is not reasonable to expect to make substantial statistical progress in that period of time, what he can do is surround himself with the best people available and give the public the feeling that success is eminent.
Now the work of transition will begin. Hopefully our community will continue the trend of coming together for the success of ALL Jacksonians.
