Former TV exec crushes GOP foe

Frank Melton stood with Rick Whitlow, his mayoral opponent, Tuesday night and said it’s time for business.

In front of a cheering crowd, Melton, a Democrat, outlined his platform of unity and progress for Jackson during the next four years.

“For the second time in my life I’m a little bit frightened, but we’ll get this thing done,” he said Tuesday night. “We’ll need all your help. All 184,000 Jacksonians. Forget about Republican, forget about Democrat. Forget about Caucasian, forget about African American and forget about Hispanic.”

Melton, dressed in a signature dark suit, appeared with his wife, Ellen, Whitlow, former Jackson Mayor Dale Danks and others at Dennery’s Restaurant to declare himself mayor-elect. He took the election with 24,594 of the 27,732 unofficial votes cast.
