City Council Rejects Settlement Offer

Jackson City Council members voted down a lawsuit settlement involving former police officer Mertis Walker.

City leaders voted against paying $75,000 to Blanche Ann Ray who sued the city and Walker. Walker had Ray arrested for failing to repay money she borrowed from Walker’s lending business.

Jackson attorney Sam Begley was hired by the city to work on the appeal. He suggested the settlement. Begley did not return our calls for a comment.

Council president Dr. Les McLemore said,”During the discussion after the vote yesterday. Some council members said ‘What exactly have we done?’, and they were asking essentially ‘What are the next steps?’. I have put an item on the agenda for next Tuesday as a discussion item to have a discussion of this matter led by Mr. Begley and the city attorney Mr. Wallace, but I think the vote speaks for itself.”
