Memo to our next mayor: Look within JPD before hiring an outsider
Moore’s departure will probably be a centerpiece of the June 7 general election, where Democrat Frank Melton will face Republican Rick Whitlow.
Melton, the former Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics director, has acknowledged that Shirlene Anderson is his top candidate for chief. Anderson served the state Highway Safety Patrol and the MBN for 29 years before retiring last year.
She would be a historic choice since no woman has served as the department’s permanent leader.
Anderson may have the ingredients to be an effective chief. But, as Whitlow has suggested, some officers already at the Police Department – including a group of women – merit consideration.
