CL – Redistrict fight intensifies
NAACP taking its case to U.S. Supreme Court
The NAACP is taking the fight over Mississippi's legislative districts to the U.S. Supreme Court. The organization filed a notice this week that it will appeal a federal panel's ruling that candidates vying for legislative seats this year must do so under current districts. Carroll Rhodes, attorney for the NAACP, said the appeal will be filed within 30 days, but he would not provide any further details. The 30-day timeline pushes any potential court action close to the Aug. 2 primary election and the eventual November general election. The candidate qualifying deadline was June 1.
