Governor Phil Bryant received the 2019 Champion for Children Award. Also receiving the award is Representative Richard Bennett.
The award is designated for individuals are making a positive difference for children in their areas. When Governor Bryant was given this award his staff said they highlighted several of his legislative accomplishments for children, focusing on his efforts with early childhood learning that include how outspoken he has been on the importance of investing in children at an early age.
After receiving this award he received a congratulatory phone call from CEO of Save the Children, Mark Shriver.
“Governor Bryant continues to be a leader in children’s advocacy and educational policies. Due to his leadership, the number of children in Child Protective Services has reduced significantly and the number of adoptions have doubled. In addition, he has passed critical legislation to confront literacy levels in the state. With the passing of the third grade reading gate, 85% of third graders can read on grade level and advance on to the 4th grade. Governor Bryant was also an advocate for the passing of the Early Learning Collaborative Act in 2013. This act led Mississippi to becoming a national model for early childhood learning.”
Governor Bryant has served as Chairman of both Jobs for American Graduates and the Education Commission of the State. He is a former big brother in the Big Brothers- Big Sisters Organization and was recognized as a Champion for Children in 2017 by the Mississippi Association of Child Care Advocates.
