Wannstedt put Pitt football back on map
Even on a dreary day, there seems to be a glow sparkling off the national championship ring that Dave Wannstedt wears with incalculable pride.
From time to time, as he leans back in his chair, Wannstedt unconsciously agitates the mammoth diamond-studded ring he earned as a graduate assistant after the Panthers’ 1976 title run.
In the 33 years since Pitt won the last of its nine titles, Wannstedt has been a coaching vagabond — moving from Oklahoma State to Southern Cal to the University of Miami to Dallas to Chicago to Miami — all the while, his heart’s desire was to come home again
