LSU air game clicks vs. MSU

There were so many plots and subplots to LSU’s 30-26 victory at Mississippi State on Saturday, it’s understandable if some of the underlying themes got lost in the shuffle.

There was the rain, Patrick Peterson’s interception return for a touchdown, more rain, the Tigers’ special-teams woes (at times because of the rain), Mississippi State’s big pass plays, Chad Jones’ punt returns — good and bad — and finally the LSU defense making a goal-line stand for the ages.

Oh, and hidden among all that, the Tigers finally flashed the ability to stretch the field with quarterback Jordan Jefferson and three of his veteran receivers.

For the second week in a row, the vertical passing game was a key component of the offensive game plan, and this time Jefferson connected on several deep throws.

The biggest was a 58-yard strike to Brandon LaFell on a deep post pattern on LSU’s first snap of the second half — the longest completion of Jefferson’s career.
