When the Notre Dame defense looked across the line at practice this week, it didn’t see scrubs running the scout team trying to simulate the offense Michigan State will run today, when the Spartans visit South Bend, Ind.
Coach Charlie Weis meant business when he sent quarterback Jimmy Clausen and the rest of the offensive starters to tune up what has been a porous defense that ranks 88th nationally against the run (171.5 yards per game, 5.1 per carry).
”We didn’t just run our plays,” Weis said. ”We took the good guys and ran Michigan State plays against them, too. That was first and foremost, trying to win the line of scrimmage. Before you get to the other stuff, that’s where it all starts.”
