Pete Carroll’s Quarterback Connection
Southern California Coach Pete Carroll knows quarterbacks.
He recruits and studies them. He polishes and cajoles them. He controls and, yes, identifies with them.
As a youngster growing up in the affluent suburb of Marin County, just outside San Francisco, Carroll fantasized about playing quarterback in high school and college and even in the N.F.L. Turns out, he was never big enough or good enough, but that didn’t stop him from playing quarterback in the annual Turkey Bowl pickup touch football game he and his friends played every year at Thanksgiving, until his schedule at U.S.C. finally interfered.
