Omaha Bound: Scrappy Eagles rally for historic win
GAINESVILLE, FLA. — The Southern Miss Golden Eagles are determined to send coach Corky Palmer out in style.
With three runs in a dramatic eighth-inning rally, USM beat Florida 7-6 on Sunday to sweep the NCAA Super Regional and advance to the school’s first College World Series.
“It proves that our kids just gave everything they had,” said Palmer, who will retire when the season ends after 12 years as the USM coach. “Tonight, I’m almost shell-shocked we won with the way we started.”
Third baseman Taylor Walker and second baseman James Ewing turned a double play to end the game, setting off a wild dogpile celebration at the pitcher’s mound. “There was no way I wasn’t turning that double play,” Ewing said.
