It’s Time For Alabama to Hire a Black Coach
The race issue is tiresome to some people. I get it. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep talking about it, though. Today in The Birmingham News, I wrote a column saying it’s time for Alabama to hire a black head coach in a major sport. The opportunity is there now that Mark Gottfried’s job is open. There are plenty of quality black candidates.
Because coaching opportunities have been so unequal, it’s important to keep the dialogue going. It’s not just Alabama that is behind in hiring a black head coach in football or men’s basketball. Other schools are in the same boat, including Auburn, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Florida within the SEC.
