Dixon carries Bulldogs over Arkansas
STARKVILLE — Anthony Dixon ran for a career high 179 yards and caught two touchdown passes Saturday to lead Mississippi State to a 31-28 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Bulldogs came out flat and got down 14-0 before its offense woke up and rattled off 17-straight points to take a 17-14 lead into halftime.
Less than five minutes into the game, Arkansas running back Michael Smith scored on a 15-yard run, and Arkansas scored again on the second play of their second possession – an 87-yard bomb to Lucas Miller on a blown coverage assignment.
After State pulled ahead 31-21 with 11:15 left in the game, Arkansas made a last-ditch effort to spoil the Dogs’ home closer by narrowing the gap to 31-28 with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ben Cleveland with 25 seconds left and then recovered an onside kick at their own 40 yard line. But Alex Tejada’s 46-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, ending the Razorback’s bid for overtime and sealing the win for the Dogs.
