The highs and lows of “The Boss”

After a colorful 35-year reign as “The Boss,” George Steinbrenner, 78, handed over the day-to-day operations of the Yankees to his youngest son, Hal, who turns 40 on Dec. 3.

Although George’s failing health forced him into the background in recent years, the move became official when baseball’s owners met yesterday and approved the switch. Major League Baseball said George requested the change.
The move clears up any confusion over who is in charge of the club. George’s oldest son, Hank, 51, has been the more vocal team representative, while Hal has preferred to stay out of the limelight.
Hal is responsible for the club’s financial operations, and Hank oversees general manager Brian Cashman and baseball operations. George retains his title as the team’s chairman.
