Are ugly days done?

Franklin stresses AU offense can be, will be fixed soon

AUBURN – As Auburn offensive coordinator Tony Franklin reviewed the film Sunday from Auburn’s bizarre 3-2 victory over Mississippi State, his cell phone buzzed with supportive text messages.
In 2006, Franklin’s first year at Troy, the offense went through a similar series of growing pains before finally clicking. The message from his friends in the coaching business: Keep at it.
“The good thing for me is I have been through this where it’s been ugly before,” Franklin said. “If you coach long enough, it’s always going to be ugly at some point in your life. I’ve had several text messages from college coaching friends of mine today that said they sure would have liked to have had an ugly 3-2 win. We’ve got to win. That’s all I know.”
Franklin took blame for Saturday’s failure to reach the end zone, but continued to express confidence in his offensive system, which has struggled through three games. He said a slew of penalties and three crucial turnovers kept Auburn from reaching its potential Saturday in Starkville.
“We’re so close,” he said. “It’s scary how close we are.”
