What big issues will Mississippi Legislature tackle in 2018? Pine Belt lawmakers weigh in
Hudson said despite looming budget problems, something must be done to fix county bridges that are unsafe.
“Nobody likes to raise taxes. I’m a conservative, but I’m ready to do something to raise money (for county bridge repairs),” he said. “We’ve got to come up with a fuel tax or some other method.”
Hudson said he thinks he’s ready to vote for a 7-cents-per-gallon fuel tax, but he said lawmakers might go another way and approve a state lottery.
“I don’t like it — it’s taking money out of Mississippians’ pockets to play a lottery,” he said. “It’s not a good way to raise money, but I think there are enough people in Jackson to get it passed.
“I look for the leadership to stay neutral on it and a lottery bill will pass. I’m gonna vote against it, but I think I’ll get beat.”
