GEOFF PRNDER: Hood sweating challenge, but Hurst lacks funding
Incumbent Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood “going negative” in a TV ad last week against Republican challenger Mike Hurst is a sure sign the three-term Hood is sweating his re-election at least a little.
Hurst, an ambitious former federal prosecutor who headed the Mississippi Department of Corrections and Mississippi Department of Marine Resources corruption cases, among others, is working hard and making a race of it. It appears to be the only statewide contest that’s remotely competitive, with Hood the only statewide incumbent who appears remotely vulnerable.
But toppling Hood, the “Last Democrat in Dixie,” remains a very tough challenge, and Hurst doesn’t appear to be getting much help from the state GOP, including Gov. Phil Bryant.
