Leflore County Land Donation to Protect Wildlife and Encourage Hunting
Greenwood, Miss.— Approximately 293 acres of land in the Mississippi Delta will now be managed as a wildlife preserve through a generous donation to the State of Mississippi. The land surrounds Six Mile Lake in Leflore County, north of Greenwood.
“This donation will provide a refuge for winged wildlife. More ducks will now remain in this region of the Delta, increasing both survival and hunting opportunities,” says Secretary Hosemann.
The land is expected to be managed by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) as a wildlife refuge. Hunting is not expected to be allowed on the refuge. The donation is valued at more than $700,000.
“This generous gift will promote duck, deer and turkey hunting in areas surrounding the refuge,” says Secretary Hosemann. “Mississippi hunters will benefit from this land donation.”
The refuge is located near the Malmaison, a 9,400 Wildlife Management Area which houses a significant amount of wild turkey, white-tailed deer, and squirrels. Hunting and fishing is permitted on the Malmaison during times designated by the MDWFP.
The wildlife refuge will be known as the “Ray Tribble Wildlife Refuge,” named after the father of Annette Tribble Morgan, wife of Buddy Morgan, who donated the largest portion of the land. Two brothers, David and Bryan Cade donated a smaller portion of acreage for the refuge in honor of their grandfather, Dr. Bryan Baker.
