Insurance Commissioner Chaney urges earthquake coverage

Do Mississippians need earthquake coverage? Insurance commissioner says they do

JACKSON, Mississippi — Wednesday night’s 4.0 earthquake that shook Missouri and was felt as far south as northern Mississippi was a jolting reminder that Mississippi is vulnerable to earthquakes, Commissioner of Insurance Mike Chaney said.

The earthquake hit at 10:51 p.m. and was centered near Steele, MO.

The greatest risk of an earthquake in Mississippi comes from the New Madrid seismic zone. The southern end of the 200-mile-long zone is in Arkansas, about 40 miles from the northwest corner of Mississippi.

Today Chaney urged Mississippians to check their homeowner’s policies for earthquake coverage.
