Southern Miss Receives Check for over $400,000
Hattiesburg, Miss.—Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann presented The University of Southern Mississippi with a check for $432,307 in the President’s Conference Room at the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building on the University’s Hattiesburg campus.
“In the aftermath of a tornado which tore through Southern Miss campus, the University needs every dollar to rebuild,” says Secretary Hosemann. “While these funds must be used to support the University’s Gulf Coast Research Lab on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, hopefully this will allow for the University to dedicate more funds to rebuilding the Southern Miss campus in Hattiesburg.”
The funds are part of a settlement agreement reached in 2002 resolving long standing land issues on a piece of property located at Point Cadet in Biloxi. As part of the settlement agreement, funds generated from rents on the Point Cadet property are distributed among the State of Mississippi, The University of Southern Mississippi, and the City of Biloxi.
“The University of Southern Mississippi appreciates Secretary Hosemann’s oversight of the distribution of these funds. Our Gulf Coast Research Laboratory is an asset not only for The University of Southern Mississippi, but for the entire state of Mississippi as well. These funds help Southern Miss continue its important mission of teaching, research and service.”
Including this payment, over $2.8 Million has been distributed to Southern Miss as part of the settlement.
