Barbour: Voters Told ‘Terrible Things’ About Romney

Haley Barbour, the former GOP chairman and former Mississippi governor, said he hoped the convention would help Mitt Romney project a more positive personal image with voters to counter the negative portrait conveyed by the Obama campaign.

“These conventions are always more important to a challenger. The incumbent president is in our living room every day,” Mr. Barbour said, at a hotel near the Tampa convention center. Voters “don’t know much about Mitt Romney and they have been told a bunch of terrible things about him — he doesn’t care about people like you he ships jobs to china…He’s a plutocrat married to a known equestrian. The American people are going to find out a lot about Mitt Romney.”

Asked about signs that Mr. Romney will be putting more emphasis on his Mormonism, Mr. Barbour said he did not think it was important to wear religion on his sleeve. “I’m a born again evangelical Christian but I don’t go out and talk about it all the time. .. My mamma use to say, if you see a fella walking down the street with a bible in one hand, watch out for what he’s got in the other hand.”
