Shouldn’t undo successful program, Miss. lawmakers say

Two members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation are backing legislation that would block federal waivers for states that want more flexibility in implementing welfare-to-work programs.

The programs are required under the landmark 1996 welfare reform law.

Republicans Sen. Thad Cochran and 1st District Rep. Alan Nunnelee recently cosponsored measures they say would preserve the work requirements included in the law.

“Welfare reform of the 1990s is one of the few things in Washington that has actually worked,” Nunnelee said. “We don’t need to undo a successful program.”
