LT. GOVERNOR BRYANT TO HOST AGRIBUSINESS SUMMIT

Discussing the current state of agriculture in Mississippi and ways to help keep our agricultural industry competitive in the 21st century are the themes of Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant’s upcoming Agribusiness Summit.

“Mississippi’s agricultural community is a $6.5 billion industry and growing,” Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said. “Agribusiness is about thousands of jobs all across our state, innovation, and technology, and how we as a state must continue to work together to help improve one of our greatest assets here in Mississippi.”

Mississippi is home to 42,300 farms and 11 million acres of farmland, according to the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce. This industry accounts for 17 percent of the state’s workforce.

The one-day summit will provide a venue for the business and development community, local farmers, and agricultural associations, to advance Mississippi’s growing agricultural community, through open networking sessions and panel discussions.

Mississippi State University, Mississippi Farm Bureau, and the Delta Council helped organize the Agribusiness Summit. The Agribusiness Summit will address a variety of topics.

A few of those topics to be discussed include the impact of new regulations on Mississippi producers, the 2012 farm bill, trade and export, infrastructure corridors, the bio fuels revolution, and what the future holds for agriculture in our State.

“The Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine looks forward to participating in this timely event,” Dr. Greg Bohach, Vice President for Agriculture, Forestry, and Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State said. “Considering the state of the economy and the upcoming 2012 Farm Bill, this is a very important summit.”

The summit will be held Tuesday, October 18, at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson. More information may be found by going to: www.bryantsummit.com.
