Ark. senator’s FEMA bill reasonable compared to Thompson

U.S. Reps. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi’s 2nd District and Cedric Richmond of Louisiana have introduced legislation that would block the Federal Emergency Management Agency from recouping money it paid to victims of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma because of an agency error.

Not a good idea in our opinion.

A better proposal is legislation introduced in the Senate by Democrat Mark Pryor of Arkansas. It would give FEMA the option of not recouping the erroneous payments, but wouldn’t make it a requirement.

Pryor’s bill has bipartisan support, including Republicans Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Richard Shelby of Alabama and David Vitter of Louisiana, along with Democrat Mary Landrieu of Louisiana.
