Barbour seeks federal disaster declaration for 3 counties

Gov. Haley Barbour has requested a federal disaster declaration for Hinds, Greene and Kemper counties based on final damage reports from Friday’s outbreak of tornadoes and severe storms.

Barbour has sent the request to President Barack Obama, asking for the major disaster area declaration, which would open up residents’ access to assistance from the federal government.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is still working with local governments to calculate the costs of debris removal, damage to public infrastructure and overtime pay for public employees who responded to the storm.
