CL – More Dems needed for two-party system
As Mississippi approaches the 2011 statewide election qualifying deadline, Democrats are conspicuously absent from the list of candidates qualified for statewide office once one gets past races for governor and attorney general.
In 1988, Mississippi Democrats held all eight statewide elected offices. In 1992, Republicans Kirk Fordice and Eddie Briggs held the state’s top two elective offices for the first time since Reconstruction.
