Wicker rooting for small-town America
A fellow Republican is opposed to a proposal by Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) to eliminate a program that subsidizes air carriers to provide service to small airports.
McCain’s amendment would save $200 million a year by eliminating the annual Essential Air Service program that pays airlines to provide scheduled service to about 150 communities. The program was created to ensure that less profitable routes to small airports would not be eliminated when airline service was deregulated in 1978.
A House study group has also proposed killing the program, but Senator Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi), whose state has several airports subsidized by the program, does not think it should be scrapped.
