HARPER REACTS TO PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS TO CONGRESS

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R–Miss.) made the following statement this evening in response to the President’s State of the Union:

“Tonight the President called on Congress to reduce the deficit and enact government reforms such as banning earmarks, both initiatives that House Republicans have already adopted.

“Just today the House approved a resolution to return non-security discretionary federal spending to Fiscal Year 2008 levels. House Republican rules enact a ban on congressional earmarks, and the House has passed a resolution to reduce Members’ budgets by five percent.

“Actions always speak louder than words.

“I welcome the President’s change of heart and look forward to his joining Republicans in our efforts to create jobs, drive down spending and shrink the size of the federal government.”
