Citizens ask for district fairness
Mississippians say they want lawmakers to use “common sense” as they draw the state’s legislative districts in coming months.
“There is a lot of gerrymandering,” Jackson resident Laura Van Overschelde said Wednesday, following a public hearing on reapportionment. “I just think it splits people – neighbors – who are like-minded.”
With the Wednesday hearing, lawmakers wrapped up a series of a dozen such meetings across the state.
Dozens of people, including a class from Mississippi College’s law school, packed the Hinds County Courthouse to hear about the process.
