House Approves $1.75 Million in Childers’ THUD Appropriations Requests
Washington, DC – Last night, he U.S. House of Representatives approved $1.75 million in appropriations requests submitted by Congressman Travis Childers (MS-01) to benefit important transportation and development projects in Mississippi’s First Congressional District. Through its passage of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill, the House allocated funding for two projects that will improve transportation infrastructure, strengthen public safety, and promote economic development in North Mississippi.
“It is essential that Mississippi’s First Congressional District has the transportation infrastructure it needs to promote economic development and strengthen local communities,” said Childers. “This legislation will ensure that we are able to transport goods and people safely into and out of the First District, helping to attract, grow, and develop industries throughout the region. I will continue to do everything I can to see that this funding is included in the final legislation and ensure that North Mississippi gets its fair share.”
Below are descriptions of Childers’ funding requests approved by the House:
• $1,250,000 – Holly Springs Road Project – Desoto County, MS. The Holly Springs Road Project is to provide improvements to a one-mile segment of roadway over the Coldwater River and tributaries that experiences significant and destructive flooding.
• $500,000 – Old Taylor Road Roundabouts. The City of Oxford received an enhancement grant in the amount of $1 million from MDOT to create pedestrian and bike friendly routes in this area. It was determined that the most efficient way to incorporate the enhancement plan at this particular section of Old Taylor Road would be to construct roundabouts to replace the current framework of stop signs. MDOT has approved the proposed plan and has funded a feasibility study that is currently underway.
“Once again, the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors and the public wants to thank you and your colleagues for your help in alleviating the flooding on Holly Springs road…We know that you and all our Congressional delegation have worked diligently to help to get the funding for this project and I know you will continue to do so,” said Russell E. Dorris, DeSoto County Board of Supervisors Director and Road Manager, in a letter to Childers.
“The Old Taylor/Hwy 6 interchange is a very congested area for our community, and we are certainly grateful to Congressman Childers and his staff for helping us secure funding for this needed improvement. We believe that it is money well spent and will serve the community and University for generations to come,” said Oxford Mayor George G. Patterson.
