AP – Barbour addresses lt. govs in Biloxi

BILOXI, Miss. — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has told the nation’s lieutenant governors that the Magnolia State will bear mostly financial scars from the BP oil spill.

Barbour’s comments came Wednesday at the opening of the National Lieutenant Governors Association annual meeting in Biloxi.

“As you noticed, I hope, the beaches are clean, the water is clear, the food is great,” Barbour said.

Barbour said Mississippi has fared much better than Louisiana, which is much closer to the source of the oil. Barbour said Louisiana has more fragile marsh land lining its shores, while Mississippi has some buffering from the barrier islands.

He said tourism is down about 40 percent on the Gulf Coast and he believes because many potential tourists see images on the national news of oiled birds in other states and decide not to visit Mississippi, thinking conditions are the same all over the Gulf Coast.
