From JAG to judge: Carlton has a passion for the law
“She has always been a capable young woman and even to this day she cares deeply about Columbia and Marion County,” Houston said.
Carlton graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1986 and went on to graduate from Ole Miss School of Law in 1989.
It was after law school while studying for the bar exam and working as a Mississippi Supreme Court clerk – that she met her future husband – Scott Carlton.
Scott Carlton was studying to be a doctor and in his fourth year of medical school in the U.S. Army.
“We dated, got engaged and got married that summer,” Judge Carlton said. “I left my clerkship and we got married on June 2, 1990. By July 7 of the same year, I joined the Judge Advocate General’s Corps because I wanted to practice law. I wasn’t going to quit just because I married a soldier.”
