MDWFP’s plan keeps bows legal, at a price

State wildlife officials announced Thursday a plan that will keep archery equipment legal on deer during gun seasons.

But the good news for bow hunters comes at a price. The same change in regulation includes creation of a new, early primitive weapons firearm season that will fall on days previously exclusive to bow hunting.

The announcement, in the form of a press release without further comment, came a day after the agency learned of an opinion from Attorney General Jim Hood, which said that under a specific section of the Mississippi Code, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) lacked authority to allow archery during gun season. In the same opinion, however, the AG’s office said there may be other applicable statutes the agency could use to allow bows.
