Schools: Consolidation faces barriers
A special blue-ribbon panel studying school consolidation is moving cautiously as it seeks to put together recommendations for possibly merging some of Mississippi’s 152 school districts.
That is understandable because consolidating school districts is one of the most controversial issues to tackle. But it is also is one of the most important.
The group, appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour, has been working on a draft proposal. Earlier the panel heard recommendations from an outside consulting firm, which proposed the merger of 18 school districts. The 18 districts included: Aberdeen, Benoit, Coahoma County, Coffeeville, Drew, East Jasper, Hazlehurst, Hollandale, Indianola, Jefferson Davis County, Kemper County, Montgomery County, North Panola, Okolona, Oktibbeha County, Quitman, Shaw and West Tallahatchie.
