Wicker to serve on Louisiana judge’s impeachment committee

WASHINGTON — Sen. Roger Wicker will be part of a special Senate committee charged with overseeing the impeachment trial of a Louisiana judge accused of taking gifts and money and making false statements.

Wicker, a Republican, is one of 12 senators on the bipartisan committee that will oversee the impeachment proceedings for District Court Judge Thomas Porteous Jr., who hears cases in Louisiana’s Eastern District. The hearing is only the fifth such trial in the last two decades.

The committee, which held its first organizational meeting Tuesday, is mostly made up of lawyers.

Wicker, a former House member, also served as a county public defender and military prosecutor. Republican and Democratic leaders appointed the committee members.

“He will be exercising one of his most important roles as a senator under the Constitution,” said Courtney Sanders, a spokesman for Wicker.
