Lawmakers mull anti-bullying bill

Lisa Williams was at home in Prentiss when her son called from school to say his glasses were broken. Then, he started crying.

But there was more to the story.

Matthew Burkett, 8, was sitting at his desk when he was hit by another boy, said Williams, who described the other boy as a “chronic bully.” Matthew struck back, and both were suspended from school, she said.

“He’s a special-needs child,” Williams said of her son. “He has enough problems trying to keep his shoes tied and keeping up with the other children in the classroom. Fighting is not in his nature.”

As the Legislature took up anti-bullying bills this session, lawmakers said they have heard such stories from parents who want to see something done to keep their children safe in school.
