CL – Two Miss. women may be next U.S. attorneys

Two Miss. women may be next U.S. attorneys

Natchez attorney Deborah McDonald, 52, is a leading candidate for U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi. In the Northern District of Mississippi, the leading candidate is 40-year-old Oxford attorney Christi McCoy.

If a woman is selected to either post, it would be a first for Mississippi.

McCoy and McDonald would neither confirm nor deny she is under consideration. But sources have told The Clarion-Ledger that the two women are the leading choices to head the two offices.

McDonald has practiced law for 27 years. She has worked for Legal Services.

“I have handled all type of cases,” McDonald said.

Sources say McCoy’s name was sent to President Barack Obama, and he has submitted her name to the Department of Justice as his nominee for the 37-county Northern District.

When asked if she is interested in the position, McCoy said this week: “Of course. I would be honored.”
