Patrons fight for fine dining at Sophia’s
he city of Jackson has asked the Mississippi Supreme Court to review its Aug. 13 decision that the city used illegal spot zoning to allow the bed and breakfast to operate a restaurant in the Belhaven neighborhood. The City Council made that decision in 2004, and four of the Fairview’s neighbors have been fighting it since.
In a 15-page brief filed last week, acting City Attorney Pieter Teeuwissen argued Sophia’s fills a “compelling public need” and is in keeping with the city’s plans for making Belhaven a mixed-use urban neighborhood.
Bycofski’s bridge club meets in the white napkin establishment that mixes comfort food with a tea-room atmosphere. She and her companions agreed no other place in Jackson compares. “It’s an asset to the city,” diner Edith Drummonds said.
