Auction to settle Melton tax debt

The northeast Jackson home of the late Mayor Frank Melton is heading toward the auction block for unpaid taxes, according to records from the Hinds County tax collector’s office.

Melton’s estate owes $15,310.38 in property taxes and penalties on the Carter’s Grove home and some surrounding vacant lots.

Melton died at age 60 of undisclosed causes May 7 after being rushed to St. Dominic Hospital two days earlier. He had a history of heart problems.

Hinds County Tax Collector Eddie Fair said Melton’s house, along with thousands of other properties with unpaid taxes, will go up for public auction at the Hinds County Courthouse Aug. 31, unless the taxes are paid soon.

“Actually, we hope we don’t have to sell any of it. We hope people will come in and pay their taxes,” Fair said Friday.
