GOP circulates voter ID petition
Voters may be able to decide whether the state should require voter ID.
The Mississippi Republican Party launched a statewide campaign Monday to get a voter identifiaction initative on the next ballot. The GOP kicked off the nine city tour at the Republican headquaters in Jackson.
Republicans are hoping to gather 100,000 signatures supporting the initative by October.
If enough people sign the petition, Mississippians could vote on the initiative in the next statewide election.
Under the initiative, Mississippians would have to show photo ID to vote. Those who can’t afford a photo ID would be able to get one free of charge from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
